10. Elsdon to Rothbury

If you thought yesterday was isolated and remote, well, there’s even less today – apart from trees – there are trees, lots and lots of trees. So, pack your tree spotters guide and provisions, it’s time for a woodland adventure!

The route leaves Elsdon by Crown Farm and enters the Harwood Forest by East Todholes. Following the path through Whitlees, Harry’s Wood, Gunner’s Box – with the remains Manside Cross, an old way marker – and Redpath before picking up St Oswald’s Way to finally leave the forest at Croquet Cairn. Keeping to St Oswald’s Way and crossing the moors to pass Spylaw, Whittondean and Whitton to Rothbury.

An alternative route reaching extra hill tops leaves west from Whittlestick Corner (just before Coquet Cairn) heading past Shelby’s Cove, over Simonside, Dove Crag and The Beacon before descending back to the main route at the Lordenshaw car park.
