6. Garrigill to Allenheads

After an overnight rest in Garrigill walk back up the lane to re-join the route at Loaning Head. There’s a little more civilisation on today’s route – but not much, there is still plenty of isolation to enjoy, so let’s go.

The route follows the path to Dodbury and above Garrigill Burn, before crossing at a vast area of disused mines into Nenthead – the former base of the London Lead Company. Heading towards Dykeheads, crossing moorlands – from Cumbria to Northumbria – to reach Coalcleugh, then over Carrshield Moor to Philipson’s Fold. Descending to Swinhope Mill, passing through White Ridge and Burnfoot to The Dodd, then a short stroll in to Allenheads.

An alternative route heads from Philipson’s Fold to Allendale Town by following Isaac’s Tea Trail, then returning to the main route, significantly reducing the moorland stretch for Section 7.
